We, Christians, all know about the story of Noah. The story goes something like this. A few thousand years ago, there was a guy named Noah. In the time of Noah, people on the earth were becoming more and more evil every day. God, being filled with wrath, decided to wipe the surface of the earth with a flood, however, He decided to show mercy on Noah and his family. God told Noah to build an ark which took 120 years for Noah’s family to finish. At last, the flood gulped up every living land creatures except the ones in Noah’s ark. Even though this story is a few thousand years old, the story still teaches us valuable lessons to us today.

First, the story warns us that the chaos and the disasters will come to us. Though Noah was faithful, the flood still came. Second, however, God will show the path to the faithful ones to prepare for the coming chaos and the guidance God will provide is strict, precise and accurate. God was not vague about his instructions to Noah but rather, God showed exactly how to make the ark, even the kind of wood to use. Third, the process of preparation for the coming chaos will require patience. Noah’s whole family had to work on building the ark for 120 years. Fourth, when doing the work for God, God provides. God led all the animals that needed to be on the ark. As the flood came, God closed the heavy door of the ark which Noah could not close since it was too heavy. Finally, it is too late if we prepare for the chaos as we see it coming. Many of the people who made fun tried to run away to survive through the flood but it was already too late for them.

The new year has come. It is the time of the year for making new resolutions and setting up new goals. As we set up the goals, we feel as if we already have accomplished all the goals. It is terribly easy to be naïve thinking that our lives are going to be easy. I hope and pray to remind myself of the teaching of Noah’s story. I know the difficult times will come. I do not know when and how, however, I know God will provide the path if I am faithful to Him. Though many concerns will enter into my head, I hope to remember that God provides my needs. Instead of setting up vague goals so that I can have a way out just in case if I fail, I long to pay attention to God carefully to listen to His sword-sharp Words. Recognizing my desire of the flesh, I know I will want to postpone my work as God’s servant until the storm knocks on my door. Thus, I will give the handle of my life to God and walk in the path He called to be, every day fully trusting God.

우리, 기독교인들은 모두 성경에 나오는 노아의 이야기를 알고 있습니다. 노아의 이야기는 이렇습니다. 몇천 년 전에, 노아라는 사람이 있었습니다. 노아가 살고 있었을 때, 이 세상은 더욱 악해지고 또 악해졌습니다. 이에 진노하신 하나님께서 온 지구를 홍수로 휩쓸 계획이셨지만 노아와 그의 가족에게는 자비를 베푸셨습니다. 하나님께서는 노아에게 방주를 지으라 명하셨고 노아는 120년이라는 시간을 거쳐 방주를 완성하였습니다. 드디어, 홍수가 내리기 시작했고, 홍수는 이내 노아의 방주에 있던 동물들과 노아의 가족을 제외한 땅의 모든 살아 숨 쉬는 것들을 집어삼켰습니다. 노아의 이야기는 몇천 년이나 된 이야기이지만 이 이야기는 오늘날 우리에게 귀중한 가르침을 주고 있습니다.

첫째로, 노아의 이야기는 혼돈과 재앙이 우리에게 올 것이라고 경고하고 있습니다. 노아의 믿음이 출중해지만, 홍수는 왔습니다. 그러나 둘째로, 하나님께서는 곧 다가올 재앙에 대해 철저하고, 명확한 대책 방안을 주심으로서 믿음이 있는 자들을 준비시키십니다. 하나님께서 노아에게 주신 해결책은 두리뭉실하거나 애매하지 않고 어떤 나무를 사용해야 하는지부터 시작하여 끝까지 자세하고 면밀하게 그리고 철저하게 알려주셨습니다. 셋째로, 다가올 재앙에 맞서 준비하는 데에는 인내심이 필요했습니다. 노아와 노아의 온 가족은 자그마치 120년이라는 시간을 통하여 방주를 만들어야 했습니다. 넷째로, 하나님께서 역사하실 때에 하나님께서 우리에게 필요하신 것들을 충족시켜 주십니다. 하나님께서는 다음 세대를 이어가야 할 동물들이 필요하시다는 것을 아셨고, 그래서 모든 필요한 동물들을 노아에게 보내셨으며, 홍수가 몰려와 방주의 문을 닫아야 했을 때, 문의 무게가 너무 무거워 노아가 닫을 수 없다는 것을 아신 하나님께서는 방주의 문을 굳게 닫으셨습니다. 마지막으로, 우리 눈앞에 재앙이 다가왔을 때 우리가 준비하려 하면, 이미 늦었다는 겁니다. 노아를 조롱하고 비난하던 많은 사람은 홍수가 밀려오는 것을 보고 도망치고 방주에 들어가 보려 했지만 이미 때는 늦은 후였습니다.

새해가 왔습니다. 새해 초는 많은 사람이 새해의 목표와 각오를 다짐하는 시간입니다. 우리가 새로운 목표와 각오를 적으면, 마치 이미 적어 놓은 목표들을 달성한 듯한 기분이 들기 마련입니다. 저도 새해의 목표와 각오를 적으면 너무나도 어리석게도 저의 삶이 너무 쉽기만 할 것 같은 생각이 듭니다. 노아의 이야기를 마음속 깊이 새기기를 원합니다. 어렵고 힘든 순간들이 오고 있다는 것을 압니다. 언제, 어디서 힘든 순간들이 닥칠진 모르지만, 주님의 믿음 안에서, 하나님께서 역경과 고난을 이겨낼 수 있도록 길을 준비하심을 믿습니다. 혹시나 실패하지 않을까 하는 두려움에 실패해도 티가 나지 않게 두리뭉실하고 애매한 목표들을 적기보단, 칼처럼 날카롭고 명확한 주님의 말씀에 조심히 귀 기울이기를 다짐합니다. 저의 육신은 아직 오지 않은 힘든 상황들에 대해, 그 상황들이 저의 문을 두드리기까지 기다리자고 하지만 육신의 거짓말에 속지 않기를 원합니다. 육신의 말에 귀 기울이기보다, 제 삶의 주권을 하나님께 드리고 전적인 믿음을 가지고 하루하루를 인내로 걷기를 원합니다.
