I get to meet new teachers every year. There are 27 awesome, young teachers in my classroom this year and I get to see and learn from them five days a week, which is a pretty big part of my life. They are all very different and unique in their own way, so they all teach me diverse things that I would never think of learning on my own.

My teachers show me to take joy in simple things. It was surprising to see them draw high quality character masks using scratch paper or come up with special dance performances only to make everyone have a good time. They can play with the simplest tools and laugh at the simplest jokes.

My teachers have very creative ideas. They each have a role in the classroom and they come up with detailed ideas on how to keep the classroom organized or how to remind each other to bring all the materials needed. Sometimes the posters they create make me wonder where these ideas come from.

My teachers take faith seriously. The thoughts they share on the Word or the questions they ask during Q.T. time allow me and others to also think about it deeply. They consider the prayer room as a place they must visit at least once a day to pray and spend time with God.

My teachers know that people can be different. They try to deal nicely with uncooperative group members or tell a friend something they’ve done wrong without hurting their feelings. They know how important it is to respect and listen to others, and they try to understand by thinking from other person’s point of view.

I had thought that it’s my job to teach them all these things, but my teacher-students take me by surprise every day. Of course they are all different and each have their own strengths and weaknesses. However, they are not ignorant children. They know and feel far more than adults think they do.

The most important fact to remember is that God is working inside each and every one of them. This is why I can hope to continue to learn and grow together with my awesome, young teachers!

저는 매년 새로운 선생님들을 만나게 됩니다. 올해는 27명의 멋지고 젊은 선생님들을 교실에서 주 5일이나 만납니다. 인생의 꽤 큰 비중을 차지하는 시간이죠. 이 선생님들은 각자 매우 다르고 특별해서 참 다양한 것들을 배울 수 있지요. 제가 스스로 배워야 겠다고 생각지 못 했던 것까지도 말입니다.

저의 선생님들은 단순한 것에서 기쁨을 발견할 수 있다는 것을 보여줍니다. 그저 다른 친구들을 웃게 해주기 위해 이면지로 고퀄리티의 캐릭터 마스크를 만드는 모습이라던지 특별 댄스 공연을 하는 모습을 보고 감탄했습니다. 때로는 가장 단순한 도구가 장난감이 되어 놀 수도 있고 때로는 가장 어이 없는 농담으로 한참을 웃기도 합니다.

저의 선생님들은 매우 창의적입니다. 교실에서 각자 맡은 역할이 있는데 교실을 어떻게 깔끔하게 유지할 수 있을지, 친구들이 준비물을 잊지 않도록 어떻게 도와줄 수 있을지를 고민하며 아주 디테일한 아이디어를 내어 실천하곤 합니다. 때로 수업을 위해 제작하는 포스터를 보면 이런 아이디어는 어디서 나오는 건지 궁금하게 만들기도 하지요.

저의 선생님들은 믿음에 대해 진지하게 고민합니다. 아침 큐티 시간에 하는 묵상 나눔이나 말씀에 대한 질문들은 모두 함께 깊이 고민해보도록 해주기도 합니다. 또한 기도실을 당연하게 매일 한 번씩은 들려서 하나님과의 시간을 보내는 장소로 여기기도 하지요.

저의 선생님들은 모든 사람들이 나와 같지 않다는 것을 압니다. 비협조적인 모둠 친구에게도 친절하게 대하기 위해 노력하며 친구가 잘못한 것에 대해 기분 상하지 않게 말해주기 위해 고민합니다. 서로를 존중하며 들어주는 것이 중요하다는 것을 알고, 상대방의 입장에서 생각해봄으로서 이해하려고 노력하곤 합니다.

이 모든 것들은 교사인 제가 가르쳐야 하는 것들이라고 생각했지만, 제 선생님이자 학생들의 모습은 매일 저를 놀라게 합니다. 물론 아이들은 모두 다 다르고 각자의 장단점을 가지고 있습니다. 그러나 무식하고 무지한 아이들이 아닙니다. 어른들이 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 알고 느낍니다.

우리가 반드시 기억해야 할 더욱 중요한 사실은 하나님께서 이 아이들의 삶에서 일하고 계신다는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 저의 멋지고 젊은 선생님들과 계속해서 배우며 자라나기를 소망하며 기대할 수 있는 이유입니다!
