“I want to be in the same class with you next year.” These were the words I could hear from my students often as the year was ending. Some of the students told me directly while other students wrote letters to me. There were also those who were too shy to openly share their feelings so they asked what grade I would be teaching next year.

It amazed me how the students show a high level of affection and curiosity for their teacher. For me, when I recall back to my childhood, I don’t remember showing much interest to my teachers. There were some teachers that I respected and still remember, but not to the point where I would express it openly like my students.

After pondering about the students’ feelings and trying to understand them, I was able to find a reasonable answer. We are all heading towards the same destination. God guides us and connects different people to be each other’s support. The fact that the students and I are spending another year together in 6th grade may mean that we still need each other’s support.

I’ve mentioned my personal wish through Parent OT that I want to grow together with my students while spending time with them. God granted my wish and gave me the opportunity to grow with the students I already know. Eventually, we will go our separate ways, but my wish will not stop. Just because we are not in the same place, it doesn’t mean we are not together. We are together IN GOD. We are all walking in the same path towards God.

I miss my previous students who are now 8th grade and I want to spend time with them again, but it’s fine the way it is now. It brings me joy that we are walking in the same path. God has saved all of us so that even if we are apart, we never have to worry about never seeing one another.

God leads in ways we could never imagine, and that is why I will be teaching 6th grade, the students I taught the previous year, with joy. After a year goes by, we will probably hesitate to go our separate ways. Our hearts may be saddened, but we don’t have to worry. We are all walking together IN CHRIST.

“내년에도 선생님과 함께했으면 좋겠어요.” 2019학년도 5학년이 끝나갈 즈음에 학생들에게서 종종 듣는 소리였습니다. 어떤 학생들은 저에게 직접 와서 말했고, 어떤 학생들은 편지를 전달하여 글로 마음을 전달했습니다. 직접 말하기가 부끄러웠던 학생들은 내년에 어떤 학년을 맡을 거냐고 물으며 에둘러서 마음을 표현했습니다.

저는 학생들이 왜 그렇게나 그것이 궁금해서 제게 관심을 보이는지 신기하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 저의 어릴 적 학창시절을 떠올려보면 선생님들을 향해 관심을 가져본 적이 별로 없습니다. 물론 존경하고 기억에 오래 남는 선생님들은 계셨지만, 우리 학생들과 같은 마음을 표현하지는 않았던 것 같습니다.

학생들의 마음을 이해하려고 하는 고민 끝에 제 나름의 답을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 우리는 같은 목표를 향해 함께 달려가고 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 삶을 인도해주셔서 서로에게 필요가 되는 사람들을 붙여주십니다. 6학년 학생들이 한 번 더 함께하고 싶은 것이 현실이 된 이유는 아직 서로가 필요하다는 의미일 수도 있습니다.

학부모 OT 영상에서 말씀드렸지만, 저는 학생들과 함께하며 같이 성장하고 싶은 소원이 있습니다. 하나님은 저의 작은 소원을 들어주셔서 함께 성장할 기회를 주셨습니다. 때가 되면 각자의 길로 보내주시겠지만 그래도 저의 소원은 계속 이어질 것입니다. 단지 같은 시간과 공간에 함께하는 것이 아니라 하나님 안에서 함께할 것이기 때문입니다. 하나님을 향해 달려가면 우리는 구원의 길을 함께 걷고 있는 것입니다.

중등으로 올려보낸 올해 8학년 학생들이 그립기도 하고, 다시금 같이 시간을 보내고 싶기도 하지만, 이대로도 괜찮습니다. 최종 목적지가 같기에 행복합니다. 하나님이 자기를 향해 오고 있는 우리 모두를 보호해 주시기에 우리는 다른 곳에서 서로 그리워하긴 하지만 영원히 헤어질 걱정은 하지 않습니다.

하나님이 생각지도 못한 계획으로 삶을 인도해주셔서 지금 저는 6학년 학생들과 한 번 더 함께하는 시간을 보낼 수 있습니다. 한 해가 가고 서로 헤어질 시간이 점차 가까워져 오면 다음 해에도 함께하고 싶은 마음이 일어날 것입니다. 그렇게 못하면 서운함이 크겠지만, 그렇다고 지금부터 헤어질 걱정에 아쉬움부터 생각하지 않습니다. 우리는 언제나 하나님을 향해 같은 길을 걸으며 함께할 것이기 때문입니다.

“내년에도 선생님과 함께했으면 좋겠어요.”

“우리는 계속 함께할 것이야. 내년에도~ 아니. 영원히~”
