Chulsu usually complains on the way to the school, but not today. His steps are fast, and his backpack feels lighter than usual. His tongue, for some reason, is just eager to blow the whistle. Today is Friday. The weekend is just around the corner, and he knows what is coming.  A lot of time—to waste. Chulsu tells himself that he is not going to waste this weekend but will be productive. Yes, he has failed time and time again regardless of how hard he tries not to waste time, but this time he feels it is going to be different. We all know how this story ends; Chulsu will waste his time during the weekend and repeats the same mistake. I am not an exception to the story of Chulsu. I have always wanted to stop wasting time and be more productive as well, but the taste of failure has gotten way too familiar.  So, this time, I researched some tips and found an interesting case I thought could help me: the infamous Stanford Marshmallow experiment.

평소에 철수는 불평하면서 학교를 등교합니다. 그러나 오늘은 다릅니다. 오늘 철수의 발걸음은 왠지 가볍습니다. 철수의 가방도 뭔가 가볍게 느껴집니다. 입에서는 휘파람이 절로 나옵니다. 오늘은 금요일이기 때문입니다. 주말이 곧 오고 있습니다. 철수는 주말이 온다는 것의 의미를 잘 알고 있습니다. 시간, 그러니까 낭비할 시간이 많다는 것입니다. 철수는 이번 주말만큼은 보람차게 보내겠다고 다짐을 합니다. 물론, 지금까지는 알찬 주말을 보내지 못하고 항상 실패해 왔습니다. 그러나, 이번에는 무엇인가 다를 것 같다는 느낌이 납니다. 우리는 이 이야기의 끝을 너무나도 잘 알고 있습니다. 철수는 아마 또다시 주말을 낭비할 것이고 그전의 실수들을 반복할 것입니다. 저한테는 철수의 이야기가 남의 이야기 같지가 않습니다. 저 또한 항상 시간낭비를 멈추고 생산적인 시간을 보내고 싶지만, 실패의 맛은 이미 너무나도 익숙해져 버렸습니다. 그래서 이번에는 팁을 좀 찾을 수 있을까 연구결과들을 찾아보았는데, 그중 저를 도와줄 수 있을거 같은 흥미로운 연구 결과 하나를 찾게 되었습니다. 바로 그 유명한 마시멜로 실험입니다.

In 1972, researchers from Stanford University sat children down in front of a marshmallow and told them that they were going to leave the room. If the child did not eat the marshmallow, the child would be rewarded with another one when the scientists returned. The researchers found that only one-third of the children successfully fought the urge to eat the marshmallow for 10 minutes. The researchers, intrigued by the result, decided to do more studies on the children, assuming they had stronger willpower. However, the scientists discovered that “willpower” was not the main factor. The children that did not eat the marshmallow just knew how to use their willpower more efficiently. Instead of actively trying to resist eating the marshmallow, the children focused on something else to distract themselves from it. Some children closed their eyes, and some played with their hands.

1972년에 스텐포드 대학에서 아이들을 대상으로 실험을 했습니다. 한 아이와 연구원이 방에 들어가서 책상이 있는 자리에 앉습니다. 그리고 그 아이에게 마시멜로 하나를 보여주면서 연구원이 다시 돌아올때까지 그 마시멜로를 먹지 않고 기다리면 하나를 더 주겠다고 하고 자리를 비웁니다. 연구에 의하면 3분의 1의 아이들만이 10분동안 마시멜로를 먹지 않고 기다렸다고 합니다. 이 연구에 흥미를 느낀 연구원들은 “의지력이 강해 보이는” 아이들을 두고 더 연구하기로 결정합니다. 그러나 연구결과에 의하면 이 “의지력이 강해 보이는” 아이들은 의지력이 더 강한게 아닌 자기의 의지력을 더 효율적으로 사용할 뿐인것으로 밝혀집니다. 실험에서 마시멜로를 먹지 않은 아이들은, 방에 혼자만 있었을때, 마시멜로에 대해서 생각하지 않기 위해 눈을 가리거나 손을가지고 노는등의 행동으로 마시멜로를 머릿속에서 떠나게 하기 위한 노력한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

The marshmallow experiment made me realize, I had been approaching my tendency to waste time from the wrong perspective. I shouldn’t focus on resisting the temptations, which would be a waste of time; I should rather focus on using my time wisely. 

이 마시멜로 실험을 통해 저는 지금까지 잘못된 관점으로 저의 문제에 대해 접근했다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 시간을 낭비하게 하는 유혹들을 저항하려고 노력하는데에 집중하는게 아니라 어떻게 하면 더욱 시간을 가치있게 보낼 수 있는지에 대해 집중해야 하는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

In life, when people are asked to “not think about an elephant”, the person will, without a doubt, think about the elephant. Likewise, when we try to avoid temptations, we often waste time and effort trying to resist when the Bible clearly states that we are to simply “flee from sin” (1 Corinthians 10:14, 1 Timothy 6:11). Just as the Marshmallow showed us, we should follow the Bible and “run to Jesus and enjoy God’s presence” rather than focusing on resisting temptations.

누군가가 “코끼리를 생각하지 않으려고 열심히 생각해보세요!” 라고 한다면, 의심의 여지없이 우리는 오히려 코끼리를 생각할 것입니다. 마찬가지로, 우리는 종종 우리들에게 오는 유혹들을 떨쳐내려고 힘겹게 저항하는 경우가 많은 것같습니다. 성경에서는 우리에게 죄에서 부터 도망가라고 했는데도 말입니다. (고린도전서 10장14절, 디모데전서 6장 11절) 마시멜로 실험이 보여준 것 처럼 우리는 성경의 말씀데로, 죄의 유혹을 저항하는데 집중하기 보다 미련없이 죄로부터 떠나 예수님께 달려가 하나님을 즐거워하는데 온힘과 정신을 집중해야 한다고 생각합니다.

Second semester has started just as it happens every year. However, know this semester is going to be different. Starting today, rather than occupying my mind with what not to do, I hope to occupy my mind on what I can do to glorify God’s name. I want to be so busy focusing on doing the things that will draw a smile on God’s face that I do not have time to think about things that waste my time. Similarly, I hope each one of you can join me on determining to focus on what is good and right and join me in not wasting time the right way.

이전과 같이 2학기가 시작되었습니다. 그러나 저는 이번 학기는 다를 것이라는 것을 압니다. 오늘부터 시간이 날 때 그리고 여유가 생기면, 시간 낭비인 행동이나 생각을 하지 않으려고 저항하는데에 에너지를 빼앗기기보다 하나님의 이름을 영광케 하는 일들을 고민하고 생각하는 데에 마음을 사로 잡히기를 바랍니다. 어떻게 하면 하나님의 얼굴에 미소를 짓게 할까 생각하고 그런 행동들을 실천하기 바빠 어떻게 시간 낭비를 하지 않을까 고민하는 시간 낭비는 하지 않길 원합니다. 여러분들 모두가 저와 함께 진정으로 보람차고 의미 있는 일들에 함께 집중함으로 이번에는 옳은 방법으로 “시간 낭비하지 않기 미션”을 함께 하기를 소망합니다.
